Eruption dynamics leading to a volcanic thunderstorm—The January 2020 eruption of Taal volcano, Philippines

چکیده

Abstract Advances in global lightning detection have provided novel ways to characterize explosive volcanism. However, researchers are still at the early stages of understanding how volcanic plumes become electrified on different spatial and temporal scales. We deconstructed phreatomagmatic eruption Taal volcano (Philippines) 12 January 2020 investigate origin its powerful thunderstorm. Satellite analysis indicated that water-rich plume rose >10 km high before creating detected by Vaisala's data set (GLD360). Flash rates increased with heights cloud expansion over time, producing >70 flashes min–1. Photographs revealed a highly region base umbrella cloud, where we infer strong convective updrafts icy collisions enhanced electrical activity. These findings inform conceptual model overlapping regimes charge generation wet eruptions—initially due ash particle near vent, followed thunderstorm-like electrification regions upper plume. Despite wide reach Taal's most occurred within 20–30 volcano, thousands hazardous cloud-to-ground densely populated area. The demonstrates can pose hazard own right, embedded broader hazards volcanism an urban setting.

Using Wind Data to Predict the Risk of Volcanic Eruption: An Example from Damavand Volcano, Iran

Damavand volcano is located 60 km to the East North- East of Tehran. It is a dormant stratovolcano outcrop in the Alborz Mountains of northern Iran and is the highest mountain (5670 m) in the Middle East and West Asia. Mazandaran Province, one of the most populous provinces by population density, Semnan and Gorgan provinces further east are neighbours of the Damavand. Volcanism in Damavand goes...

Sequential Assimilation of Volcanic Monitoring Data to Quantify Eruption Potential: Application to Kerinci Volcano, Sumatra

Quantifying the eruption potential of a restless volcano requires the ability to model parameters such as overpressure and calculate the host rock stress state as the system evolves. A critical challenge is developing a model-data fusion framework to take advantage of observational data and provide updates of the volcanic system through time. The Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF) uses a Monte Carlo...

Nano-volcanic Eruption of Silver

Silver (Ag) is one of the seven metals of antiquity and an important engineering material in the electronic, medical, and chemical industries because of its unique noble and catalytic properties. Ag thin films are extensively used in modern electronics primarily because of their oxidation-resistance. Here we report a novel phenomenon of Ag nano-volcanic eruption that is caused by interactions b...

Predictability of Volcano Eruption: lessons from a basaltic effusive volcano

Volcano eruption forecast remains a challenging and controversial problem despite the fact that data from volcano monitoring significantly increased in quantity and quality during the last decades. This study uses pattern recognition techniques to quantify the predictability of the 15 Piton de la Fournaise (PdlF) eruptions in the 1988-2001 period using increase of the daily seismicity rate as a...
